Why a logged-out viewer leaves no trace

Facebook does not track who looked at a story by watching your screen. It records a view when a request for that story arrives carrying your account's session - the cookie your browser holds after you log in. Your name goes into the story's viewer list because the request was signed with your account, not because you watched it.

That is the whole trick, and it is also the whole limit. A request with no session attached has no name to record, so it produces no entry in the list. This page fetches the story that way: our server asks Facebook for the public story, with no account of yours involved. There is nothing for Facebook to log against you because you never identified yourself.

It follows that this only works for stories Facebook already hands out publicly. A story from a private or friends-only account is never served to an anonymous request in the first place - there is nothing to fetch, and no workaround here or anywhere else that changes that.

Five ways to view Facebook stories anonymously - what holds up

Most guides list these five methods and call them all options. They are not equivalent: two carry real account risk and two simply do not do what people think they do.

The airplane mode trick No The story preloaded in the Facebook app, then airplane mode on. The view is not cancelled, only delayed. The app queues it and sends it the moment you reconnect - your name shows up in the list a few seconds later. Clearing the app's cache before reconnecting is unreliable and often loses nothing but your own data.
A second or fake account No Another Facebook account. It hides your main name, not the fact that someone viewed. The second account lands in the viewer list instead, and Facebook removes accounts it judges to be fake.

What this will not do

It will not show you a private account's stories. It will not show you a friends-only story from someone who has not added you. It will not reveal who viewed your own story, and it cannot remove a view you already left behind by opening a story while logged in - once that request reached Facebook, the entry exists.

We will not ask for your Facebook password, because there is no version of this that needs it. If another site asks, close it: the only thing your credentials can do there is give someone else your account.

One thing worth saying plainly

Staying out of a viewer list is not the same as having permission. A public story is public, but the person who posted it is still a person. Use this for the ordinary reasons people do - checking a story without starting a conversation, saving something you were shown, looking at a page or business account - and not to follow someone who has asked to be left alone.
